Embracing the Learning Space and Loaded Scrambles

Hey Reader,

Recently I saw a short clip from Dr. Becky Kennedy on the experience of learning that I think applies to a health journey as much as any other journey.

There is this temptation in all of us to have a quick fix. To just take this probiotic or eat paleo and have all our health problems miraculously fade away. The problem is, that's fantasy. Because just like life, our bodies and the environments in which they exist are incredibly complex.

Our lives are intricately interwoven with multitudes of factors that impact our health, from our relationships and stress to the water and air we have access to (typically outside of our control despite our best filters). There's also our exercise routine, our mental health, our mindfulness, our medicines, our beauty products, our sleep, our cleaning supplies, our genes, our lifestyles, our work schedules, and our food.

So just adjusting one of those is unlikely to fix every health concern you've ever had.

But it is soo hard to learn everything! It often leads to a sense of frustration, overwhelm, and wanting to give up.

Here's the thing... that icky frustrated feeling is actually the feeling of learning.

We want learning to quickly take us to knowing, but that's not how it works.

The short 2-minute video linked below describes this experience of learning if you want to watch it!

So as we are learning what ingredients make us feel good or bad, what lifestyle tweaks we can comfortably turn in into habits, and how to make more food at home- avoiding ultra-processed foods... We might not love all of that journey!

And that's ok. The goal is to embrace that frustration, keep learning, and do the hard work to get to the knowing!

The Learning Space

That space before knowing can happen, that we likely do not enjoy!

Applies to all sorts of Journeys

Here Sharon McMahon discusses how this impacts our feeling of identity and community. Since rich social connections make us healthier, this is an interesting aspect to consider.

Now, for the tasty treats

the EYWC wellness edit Alicia Pope Hey Reader, You’ve probably heard the government is shut down again, and it's now tied for the second-longest in history. The main disagreement? Whether to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits: the financial help that allows millions of Americans to buy private health insurance if their job doesn’t provide it. Think small businesses and independent contractors. We talk a lot about food and lifestyle here, but even with the cleanest diet, you still...

the EYWC wellness edit Alicia Pope Hey Reader, It has been a wild week, which has left me craving some healthy comfort food. And while I'm working on perfecting my recipe for protein-rich pulled pork mac and cheese and home-made healthier snickers, I want to share a tried and true classic cookie that is super easy to make and very delicious. It also makes me appreciate the small, little habits that help me deal with the craziness of the modern world and keep stress at bay (or at least more at...
