Hey Reader,

First, I'm so happy you're here. It's amazing to me that we live in a time where like-minded people trying to improve their health can band together on the interwebs and share knowledge and help each other grow and improve, bit by bit.

A lot is going on with health in policy these days, and I find myself wanting to share the latest legislation and policy because it deeply affects our shared goals of building a healthier community and country. It impacts the foods we have available to us and the tools and systems that can keep us safe and free from toxin exposure, not to mention the entire traditional health care system that we will all need at some point or another.

However, I am no government or public health policy expert. So I'd like to share some people who are experts that I enjoy listening to and learn a lot from.

If you are interested in access to fresher foods, limiting exposure to toxic and harmful chemicals, reducing chronic disease, and improving overall public health, here are some recommendations on who to follow for data-based information.

I'm sharing their substacks below, because this is where you can find more long-form and deeper information, which I think we all need at this current time in history. It's impossible to understand 600-pages of proposed legislation in 15-second reels, am I right? However, they are also on Instagram if you prefer to follow them there.

Understanding the government's role in health

Health policy happens within the constructs of our governmental system. We need to know the basic government structure and policy to understand why and how things are happening and what avenues we have to influence change. Sharon McMahon is an excellent author and orator who writes about small actions driving big impact and calls herself America's government teacher. She aims to show unbiased, non-partisan facts, which this inner scientist respects!

Public Health Policy

Dr. Jessica Knurick is a nutrition scientist and public health advocate who follows the details of new public health policy proposals and legislation. She breaks down the impacts on public health, including chronic disease, and infrastructure, like local small farmers.

Do you have others that you recommend? If so, I'd love to hear about them! Reply back with your recommendations and favorites.

Now, for the tasty treats

Recipe Spotlight

Cucumber Pad Thai

I love the sweet and sour mixed with davory in a classic pad Thai, but often it can feel a little heavy and dry. Which is why I'm obsessed with this cucumber noodle version. All the umami flavors but made refreshing thanks to the lightly sautéed cucumber noodles. A must try for beckoning in spring.

Next time you have a question on the validaity of a nutrition claim, email me about it or try looking it up here.

One of the benefits of publicly funded research, aside from removing industry bias, is that you the tax payer have the right to the results!

the EYWC wellness edit Alicia Pope Hey Reader, If your news feeds are anything like mine, you have heard a decent bit about artificial dyes and food colorings. And it can be super confusing to figure out what's actually going on, so I thought I'd summarize some of the important bits here. Here's a quick recap on the background Ultra-processed foods are often colored to look more palatable and fresh than they are. Compared to other countries, colored foods sold in the US have a higher...

Is AI generating your health policy?

the EYWC wellness edit Alicia Pope Hey Reader, There's been a lot of talk about hallucinations this week... and probably not the type you're thinking of. ;) I'm talking about AI hallucinations. This is when AI makes stuff up. This happens because generative AI (like ChatGPT and Gemini) is designed to do just that: generate content. It is not designed to research, summarize existing facts, or fact-check. It is designed to create something that matches the prompt and seems plausible. You can...

the EYWC wellness edit Alicia Pope Good morning Reader, I woke up to some news that I thought you would be especially interested in. Due to recent budget cuts and firings, the FDA has suspended its quality and safety testing of milk. What it sounds like is happening is that a major laboratory that performs quality testing will be closed ahead of schedule. This lab was planned to close eventually, but there is no interim lab, and the new lab is not yet ready. This means right now, there is a...
